The Old Anglo Brewery in Shepton Mallet, Somerset was built in 1864. During the construction workers discovered Roman pottery kilns and Severn Valley Ware from the 1st or 2nd century AD on the site, proving the location was an industrial hub over 1,800 years ago.
In 1872, the brewery was renamed the "Anglo-Bavarian Brewery" and employed specialized brewers from Bavaria to create a German-style lager, a product largely unknown in Britain at the time.
The brewery was incredibly successful, exporting 1.8 million bottles of beer annually across the British Empire. However During World War I, the inclusion of "Bavarian" on their bottles made them unpatriotic, leading to the brewery's eventual downfall in 1921.

Between 1868 and 1921, the brewery actually operated its own fire brigade, which served the entire town of Shepton Mallet. They notably helped fight the 1904 fire at the famous Shepton Mallet Prison.

In 1939, the Air Ministry requisitioned the site and removed and destroyed much of the industrial machinery and copper vats and melted down for scrap metal to support the war effort.
