History of Fort Widley

Fort Widley is one of the forts built on top of Portsdown Hill between 1860 and 1868. It was designed, along with the other Palmerston Forts above Portsdown, to protect Portsmouth from attack from the rear.

Fort Widley was a polygonal Fort designed by William Crossman, an officer of the Royal Engineers, who was part of the staff of the Inspector General of Fortifications at the War Office. The fort was built up from chalk, with red brick and local flint being used for buildings and revetment to the large dry ditch which was also dug at the same time.

Barracks accommodation was also provided for both officers and other ranks.

Even before the fort was completed questions arose over the effectiveness of the forts armament and the forts were not fitted with guns until some years after they had been completed.

Fort Widley had its guns removed in 1902.

In First World War it was used as a transit depot. During the Second World War it was modified to provide more accommodation. It was then used by a number of units before housing members of the Royal Corps of Signals and Auxiliary Territorial Service supporting the navy command at Fort Southwick. In 1952 the fort became home to a bomb disposal squadron and a year later an emergency civil control centre for Portsmouth was constructed in the fort's magazine.

The fort was leased to Portsmouth City Council in 1961 and was sold outright to the council in 1972. In 1990 the Fort was taken into use as an activity centre for the Peter Ashley charity.

Ghostly Activity
Visitors to the building and tunnels have heard; unexplained voices, strange footsteps, whisperings and other unknown noises. As well as the sensation of being watched and followed!

What Happens at the Event

Our events are always 100% investigation and vigil events, we won't waste time by taking you on a history tour of the venue.

We will not usually talk about the history of the building unless people ask us to do so.
We don't hold workshops or briefing on equipment usage. Any equipment that you will be using throughout the event will be explained at the start of each session by our team leaders.

For the first few hours (usually 1 hour per session) you will be in a group and you will spend time with our Mediums1 doing séances, where they will try to get the active spirit to move you in some way (this is not designed to scare you) and with our paranormal investigators doing experiments, table tilting, glass divination, Ouija boards, EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena a.k.a. ghost voice) experiments and other equipment experiments using the latest ghost hunting equipment.

After these controlled sessions you will have the opportunity to venture off on your own or in small groups to explore the venue or to hold lone vigils or re-visiting an activity that you enjoyed in our controlled sessions. In this part of the night you can use our ghost hunting equipment to do your own ghost hunt. You may take photos/videos with your own cameras throughout our ghost hunts. You may also use any of your own ghost hunting equipment during our controlled sessions.
1 A Medium may not be available at every event, please contact us for clarification.
